Become Part of a Thriving Local Community

The Waikouaiti Coast region is a hive of community activity, from sports to cultural groups and everything in between. This section details some of the community groups that you may wish to become involved with.

The Waikouaiti Museum Society operates the Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre. The Centre is staffed by volunteers and is becoming renowned for its genealogical research capabilities.

Hawksbury Lagoon Inc is a group dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Waikouaiti's lagoon which because of its size has become a significant wildlife refuge.

Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki Incorporated Society is situated in Karitane, Otago, with its office at 121 Grimness St (old Karitane School site) and its marae at the corner of Coast and Apes Roads. The marae overlooks the stunning Huriawa Peninsula and has been in existence since the replacement of the original whare in 2001.

The Society is a vehicle for papatipu rūnaka, and exists to provide ways for their people to engage at a hapū level to uphold the values and mana of Kāti Huirapa I Puketeraki and Kai te Ruahikihiki I Puketeraki. Huriawa Peninsula is historically significant to the people of Kati Huirapa, as their forebears had many settlements along the eastern coast, some of which endure today as the kaika or villages of this area.
