Where the River Meets the Sea

Karitane is located just off State Highway 1 at the junction of Waikouaiti Bay and Waikouaiti River. It has a small population of permanent residents, plus significant numbers of holiday homes which are in high demand over summer.

Karitane is well known for its most substantial home, Kingscliff, which once belonged to Plunket Society founder, Sir Truby King. It has a commanding view out over the bay and is in demand for garden and historic home tours.

Adventure activities run out of Karitane include kayaking and boat charters.

The road which runs through Karitane was once the main road to Dunedin. It is now a scenic highway, winding round the edge of the coast, which accounts for its name - Coast Road.
