Restoration of the BNZ Bank building

Bringing the BNZ Bank back to life

The restoration journey

The old BNZ bank building is an important part of Waikouaiti's local history and still has the original wooden bank counter and valut.

The Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre is fundraising to restore this beautiful building and is grateful for all grants received to date. The latest grant means we can look at the next stage of restoration, which includes options to restore or remove the verandah added to the building in the 1920s and what each option would cost.

From the street it might not look like much is happening, but behind the scenes there are a lot of volunteers working hard to restore this important piece of Waikouaiti's early settler history.

Tours of the building, which include living quarters, cost $5 for adult (free for those under 16) and can be arranged at the new museum building behind the bank.
